Private Ultrasound Scans

What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a painless medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body.

Ultrasounds are commonly used to examine your organs, tissues, and blood flow. As it does not involve radiation, it is considered a very safe procedure.

Questions About Ultrasound Scans

Your Questions, Answered

Ultrasound scans are used to detect a variety of conditions, including:

Gallbladder and kidney stones
Heart conditions
Liver diseases
Abnormalities in muscles and joints
Fluid buildup or cysts in organs
Tendon and muscle tears
Sprains
Nerve entrapments
Ovarian cysts and fibroids
Testicular conditions

In some instances, more detailed imaging may be required. An MRI scan, for example, is particularly effective for imaging soft tissue.

Prior to your ultrasound scan, our Sonographer will advise whether you need to change into a gown.

During the scan, you will usually lie on an exam table. The sonographer will apply a gel to the area being examined to help transmit sound saves. The transducer is then moved over the skin to capture the images, and the results are displayed on a monitor. If necessary, the sonographer may ask you to move into different positions.

At Lanarkshire Private Clinic, we use cutting-edge technology to create clear and detailed images for quick and accurate diagnosis.

An ultrasound scan typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes. After your scan, the gel will be wiped off and you can resume normal activities.

After receiving our report, your referrer will review the findings and discuss the results with you. If you have self-referred for your scan and require follow up, one of our team will contact you and you should arrange an appointment to see the required specialist.

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound:

For abdominal ultrasounds, you may be required to fast for several hours prior to the scan to ensure clearer images.

For pelvic ultrasounds, you might need to drink water beforehand to fill the bladder.

For transvaginal ultrasounds, no special preparation is typically needed.

No, ultrasound is generally painless. However, in some cases, pressure may be applied to the area being examined which can cause mild discomfort.

The images from your MRI scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a report for you and your referrer. This is usually completed within 48 hours.

If you have self-referred for your scan and require follow up, one of our team will contact you. It is your responsibility to refer on to a GP or relevant clinician. You can also arrange an appointment to see the required specialist at Lanarkshire Private Clinic.

Ultrasound scans are considered very low risk. They do not use ionising radiation like X-Rays or CT scans, making them a safer option for pregnant women and children.

However, like any medical procedure, it should only be performed when necessary by a medical professional.
