DEXA Scan Information

What is a DEXA Scan?

DEXA is an advanced diagnostic scan that measures bone density, bone health, and body composition – giving you a clear picture of exactly what is happening inside your body.

With a DEXA scan, you can access precise measurements of your bone density to understand your risk of fractures, diagnose and manage conditions such as osteoporosis and osteopenia, and make a plan to keep your bones strong and healthy.

For athletes, sports enthusiasts, and people who want to prioritise their health, DEXA’s accurate body composition data helps you make smarter health and training decisions for weight loss and sports performance.

Questions About DEXA Scans

Your Questions, Answered

A DEXA scan is most commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, osteopenia, and analyse body composition.

DEXA scans are also used to measure body fat percentage, fat distribution, and lean body mass. It provides a more accurate measurement of body composition than other methods like BMI or skinfold measurements, and helps with weight loss and achieving fitness goals.

In most cases, no special preparation is required. However, you may be asked to avoid taking calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan.

If you are pregnant or suspect you might be, you must inform your healthcare provider as the scan is generally not recommended during pregnancy.

Prior to your DEXA scan, you will be asked to take off any jewellery and empty your pockets (wallet, keys, and mobile phone), and may be asked to change into an examination gown provided. You will be provided with a locker to securely store your valuables.

You will then lie on the table during your DEXA body scan. The scan can take up to 20 minutes.

After your DEXA scan, you can resume your normal activities immediately, as there are no restrictions or recovery requirements.

DEXA scans use a very small amount of radiation, which is considered safe for most individuals. The radiation is much lower than that of a standard X-Ray and the benefits of monitoring bone health usually outweigh any potential risks.

However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The frequency of DEXA scans depend on your age, risk factors, and previous scan results. Generally, individuals at risk for bone loss may have a scan every 1-2 years, but this should be determined by your doctor.

While DEXA is useful for assessing bone density - which indicates a higher risk for fractures - it does not directly detect fractures.

For detecting fractures, other imaging methods like X-Rays or MRIs are used.

Pregnant women should avoid DEXA scans due to the small amount of radiation used. Additionally, individuals who are very young or are not at risk for bone conditions may not need a DEXA scan.

Always consult with your healthcare provider to determine if the scan is necessary.
