The results of your scan will be sent to you and your chosen practitioner within 48 hours, so you can create a personalised plan of your next steps.
Self-referrals are available for all ultrasound scans, DEXA bone density scans, and limb and joint MRI scans. All X-Rays, DEXA body composition scans, and other types of MRI scans require a referral from your own GP or our referral service.
MRI scans are generally considered safe and do not use ionizing radiation. However, they are not suitable for people with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, due to the strong magnetic field.
X-Rays use a small amount of radiation, but they are generally considered a very safe procedure. Side effects and complications are rare. Your referrer will assess the risks and discuss any concerns with you before offering you an X-Ray.
DEXA scans use a very small amount of radiation, which is considered safe for most individuals. The benefits of monitoring bone health usually outweigh any potential risks. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Ultrasound scans are considered very low risk. They do not use ionizing radiation, making them a safer option for pregnant women and children.
Like any medical procedure, a scan should only be performed when necessary by a medical professional.
No, diagnostic scans are generally painless. However, in the case of some ultrasound scans, pressure may be applied to the area being examined which can cause mild discomfort.
People can feel claustrophobic when having an MRI, but our machine is 10cm wider than normal to provide as comfortable an experience as possible.
As long as you did not take a sedative or contrast that requires observation, you should be able to drive yourself home after your scan. If you have any concerns, consult with your referrer.
The images from your scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a report for you and your referrer. This is usually completed within 48 hours.
If you self-referred for your scan, it is your responsibility to pass the report along to your GP or relevant clinician.
Family members or friends can accompany you to the clinic, but they will usually need to wait for you in a designated area. In the case of an ultrasound, a family member or friend can accompany you to the scan itself.
