Questions About Injection Therapy

Your Questions, Answered

Most injection therapy includes an anaesthetic, which results in an almost pain-free injection. However in parts of the body with more sensory nerves, some discomfort is inevitable.

Injection therapy is typically recommended as a method of delaying surgery when other more conservative treatments - such as pain medications and physical therapy - have been unsuccessful.

You may not be suitable for injection therapy if you:

Have an infection around the injection site
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have an autoimmune condition
Are under 18 years of age
Have uncontrolled diabetes

A medical professional will be able to confirm whether injection therapy is a good option for you.

Generally, injection therapy provides significant pain relief within a few days or weeks after the injection. Depending on the therapy you require, you may need separate doses over several weeks to provide the optimum benefit.

The effects of injection therapy lasts between several weeks and several months, depending on the specific treatment you receive.

Cortisone: The most common side effect is a cortisone flare: a condition where cortisone crystallises and causes severe pain for a couple of days. The effects can be reduced by applying ice to the injected area.

Other adverse effects include whitening of the skin and infection at the injection site, or a transient elevation in blood sugar if you are diabetic.

Viscosupplementation: Ice packs and an analgesic may be used, if required, to ease any discomfort experienced after the injection.

Any strenuous activity such as jogging or sports should be completely avoided for 48 hours to a week after the injection. These activities should be resumed only after consultation with your doctor.

Arthrosamid: The injection is generally well tolerated, but you may feel some discomfort once the local anesthetic wears off. You might also notice mild to moderate pain and/or swelling at the injection site.

Look out for any signs of infection, particularly swelling, tenderness, oozing, or warmth at the injection site or systemic symptoms such as a fever. Medications are provided as needed to address pain, infection, and other symptoms.

You should refrain from strenuous activities such as running or lifting weights for the first few days after your injection.
