An Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan is a diagnostic tool that evaluates the internal structures of the head and neck. It is safe, painless, and provides high-resolution images of the brain, spinal cord, skull, and soft tissues in the head and neck area, such as muscles, glands, blood vessels, and nerves.
Head & Neck MRIs are essential for detecting, diagnosing, and evaluating neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s, alongside soft tissue concerns such as muscle tears, inflammation, and tendonitis.

How It Works

Book your private MRI scan online, or by calling our friendly team during opening hours. We often have same-day, next-day, and evening scans available.
Get confirmation.
After booking, one of our team will get in touch to go through a questionnaire to ensure an MRI scan is safe for you. On occasion, a GP referral may be necessary.
Attend your scan.
Arrive 15 minutes before your scan, register at reception, and complete any pre-appointment checks. Your scan will typically take between 30-60 minutes.
Get your scan results.
Results of your MRI will be sent to you and your chosen medical practitioner within 48 hours, so you can create a personalised plan of your next steps.
MRI may be used to examine the brain and/or spinal cord for injuries, the presence of structural abnormalities, or certain other conditions such as:
Tumors
Abscesses
Congenital abnormalities
Aneurysms
Venous malformations
Hemorrhage or bleeding into the brain or spinal cord
Subdural hematoma
Degenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis, hypoxic encephalopathy, or encephalomyelitis
Hydrocephalus, or fluid in the brain
Herniation or degeneration of discs of the spinal cord
Prior to your brain MRI, you will be asked to take off any jewellery and empty your pockets (wallet, keys, and mobile phone). You will be provided with a locker to securely store your valuables. Always follow any specific instructions given by your healthcare provider.
You can bring a friend or family member to your brain MRI, but they will need to wait for you in our reception area.
During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. It is important to remain as still as possible to ensure clear images. The machine will make loud tapping or thumping noises, but our cutting-edge Philips 5300 MRI scanners are equipped with soothing lights, calming sounds, and nature-inspired visuals to help you feel comfortable and at ease.
A brain MRI scan typically takes up to 30 minutes.
MRI scans are generally considered safe and do not use ionizing radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scans). However, they are not suitable for people with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, due to the strong magnetic field.
Always inform your referrer and the MRI technician about any metal implants, medical devices, or other health concerns.
After the MRI scan, you can usually resume your normal activities right away,unless you have taken a sedative. If contrast material was used, your referrer may provide specific aftercare instructions.
The images from your MRI scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a report for you and your referrer. This is usually completed within 48 hours.
After receiving our report, your referrer will review the findings and discuss the results with you. If you have self-referred for your scan and require follow up, one of our team will contact you and you should arrange an appointment to see the required specialist.
Depending on your symptoms and the conditions being investigated, other imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasound may be recommended. However, MRI is particularly effective for imaging soft tissue, making it the preferred choice for head and neck symptoms and conditions.
