Diagnose the root cause of your limb or joint pain with a private MRI scan in a comfortable and calm environment at Lanarkshire Private Clinic.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans are a safe and painless procedure that produces high-resolution images of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues.
Limb and joint MRI scans help clinicians to diagnose joint problems, muscle injuries, and soft tissue disorders, as they can detect conditions that cannot be easily seen on X-rays or CT scans. These critical insights enable you to make a plan and take proactive steps to improve your spinal and joint health.

How It Works
Book your scan.
Book your private MRI scan online, or by calling our friendly team during opening hours. We often have same-day, next-day, and evening scans available.
Get confirmation.
After booking, one of our team will get in touch to go through a questionnaire to ensure an MRI scan is safe for you. On occasion, a GP referral may be necessary.
Attend your scan.
Arrive 15 minutes before your scan, register at reception, and complete any pre-appointment checks. Your scan will typically take between 30-60 minutes.
Get your scan results.
Results of your MRI will be sent to you and your chosen medical practitioner within 48 hours, so you can create a personalised plan of your next steps.
MRI scans can assess:
Soft tissue issues such as rotator cuff or Achilles tendon injuries;
Ligament tears, such as ACL injuries;
Cartilage damage, such as meniscus tears or osteoarthritis;
Bone issues, such as bone marrow edema, stress fractures, and bone infections;
Joint conditions, including osteoarthritis, joint effusions, and degenerative disc disease.
Prior to your MRI, you will be asked to take off any jewellery and empty your pockets (wallet, keys, and mobile phone). You will be provided with a locker to securely store your valuables. Always follow any specific instructions given by your healthcare provider.
You can bring a friend or family member to your joint MRI scan, but they will need to wait for you in our reception area.
During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. It is important to remain as still as possible to ensure clear images. The machine will make loud tapping or thumping noises, but our cutting-edge Philips 5300 MRI scanners are equipped with soothing lights, calming sounds, and nature-inspired visuals to help you feel comfortable and at ease.
A limb and joint MRI scan typically takes up to 30 minutes.
MRI scans are generally considered safe and do not use ionizing radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scans). However, they are not suitable for people with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, due to the strong magnetic field.
Always inform your referrer and the MRI technician about any metal implants, medical devices, or other health concerns.
After the MRI scan, you can usually resume your normal activities right away,unless you have taken a sedative. If contrast material was used, your referrer may provide specific aftercare instructions.
The images from your MRI scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a report for you and your referrer. This is usually completed within 48 hours.
If you have self-referred for your scan and require follow up, one of our team will contact you. It is your responsibility to refer on to a GP or relevant clinician. You can also arrange an appointment to see the required specialist at Lanarkshire Private Clinic.
Depending on your symptoms and the conditions being investigated, other imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasound may be recommended. However, MRI is particularly effective for imaging soft tissue, making it the preferred choice for limb and joint symptoms and conditions.
