How It Works
Book your scan.
Book your private MRI scan online, or by calling our friendly team during opening hours. We often have same-day, next-day, and evening scans available.
Get confirmation.
After booking, one of our team will get in touch to go through a questionnaire to ensure a spinal MRI is safe for you. On occasion, a GP referral may be necessary.
Attend your scan.
Arrive 15 minutes before your scan, register at reception, and complete any pre-appointment checks. Your scan will typically take between 30-60 minutes.
Get your scan results.
Results of your MRI will be sent to you and your chosen medical practitioner within 48 hours, so you can create a personalised plan of your next steps.
Before your scan, our radiographer will ask that you remove jewellery and empty your pockets, and provide a secure locker for your valuables.
During the procedure, you will be asked to lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine. It is important to remain as still as possible to ensure clear images. The machine will make loud tapping or thumping noises, but our cutting-edge Philips 5300 MRI scanners are equipped with soothing lights, calming sounds, and nature-inspired visuals to help you feel comfortable and at ease.
The procedure typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the area being examined. You can bring a friend or family member to your spinal MRI, but they will need to wait for you in our reception area.
No, an MRI scan is not painful. However, it can be uncomfortable for some people due to the need to remain still for an extended period. People can also feel claustrophobic when having an MRI, but our machine is 10cm wider than normal to provide as comfortable an experience as possible.
If you feel anxious, talk to your referrer about options to help you relax.
MRI scans are generally considered safe and do not use ionizing radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scans). However, they are not suitable for people with certain metal implants, such as pacemakers or cochlear implants, due to the strong magnetic field.
Always inform your referrer and the MRI technician about any metal implants, medical devices, or other health concerns.
After the MRI scan, you can usually resume your normal activities right away, unless you have taken a sedative. If contrast material was used, your referrer may provide specific aftercare instructions.
The images from your MRI scan will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will prepare a report for you and your referrer. This is usually completed within 48 hours.
After receiving our report, your referrer will review the findings and discuss the results with you. If you have self-referred for your scan and require follow up, one of our team will contact you and you should arrange an appointment to see the required specialist.
Depending on your symptoms and the conditions being investigated, other imaging tests like X-rays or CT scans may be recommended. However, MRI is particularly effective for imaging soft tissue, making it the preferred choice for spinal symptoms and conditions.
