Why have a DEXA Scan?
A DEXA body scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a medical imaging test primarily used to measure bone mineral density (BMD) and assess the risk of osteoporosis or bone fractures.
It can also help evaluate body composition, including fat and lean mass.
Here are the main reasons why someone might have a DEXA scan:
Assess Bone Health and Osteoporosis Risk
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and brittle. A DEXA scan is commonly used to diagnose this condition by measuring BMD. Low bone density increases the risk of fractures.
It helps identify individuals at risk of fractures due to weakened bones, especially as people age.
For individuals already diagnosed with osteoporosis, a DEXA scan can track the effectiveness of treatments aimed at increasing bone density or preventing bone loss.
Evaluate Risk in Men or Postmenopausal WomenWhile osteoporosis is often associated with women, men and postmenopausal women also experience bone density loss. A DEXA scan is useful in identifying bone health risks for both genders, especially for those with additional risk factors.
Evaluate Fracture RiskDEXA scans help assess fracture risk by determining bone density. The lower the bone density, the higher the risk of fractures, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults.
Determine Body CompositionIn addition to bone health, DEXA scans can measure the amount of fat and lean mass in the body. This can be useful for evaluating overall health, fitness, and monitoring changes in body composition, especially for people involved in fitness, weight management, or those with conditions like obesity.
Monitor Changes in Body Fat Distribution
DEXA scans are sometimes used to monitor fat distribution in individuals with conditions like obesity or metabolic disorders. This can help assess risks like cardiovascular disease.

FAQ’s
How does a dexa scanner work?
A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray technology to measure bone density. It involves passing two X-ray beams of different energy levels through the body. The difference in absorption of these X-rays helps calculate the density of bones and the composition of body fat and lean tissue.
How do I prepare for a dexa scan?
In most cases, no special preparation is required. However, you may be asked to avoid taking calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan. If you’re pregnant or suspect you might be, inform your healthcare provider, as the scan is generally not recommended during pregnancy.
What conditions can be diagnosed with a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan is most commonly used to diagnose: Osteoporosis (weak bones that are more prone to fractures), Osteopenia (lower than normal bone density, which may lead to osteoporosis), Body composition analysis (measuring body fat percentage and lean mass)
Can a DEXA scan measure body fat?
Yes, DEXA scans can measure body fat percentage, fat distribution, and lean body mass. It provides a more accurate measurement of body composition than other methods like BMI or skinfold measurements.
How often should i get a dexa scan?
The frequency of DEXA scans depends on your age, risk factors, and previous scan results. Generally, individuals at risk for bone loss may have a scan every 1-2 years, but this should be determined by your doctor.
