Why bone health matters — even before menopause
Bones are living, dynamic tissue: throughout life there’s a balance between bone formation and bone breakdown. Over time, after your mid-30s, bone breakdown can start to outpace bone formation.

This means that bone mass doesn’t stay static — without support (nutrition, activity, hormonal balance), bone density gradually declines. Because of this, by the time many women reach menopause, they may already have lost a portion of their “peak” bone mass.

What is a DEXA scan — and why it’s useful
A DEXA scan uses two low-dose X-rays to measure how dense (i.e. mineral-rich) your bones are.
The scan usually checks bones that are most at risk of fracture, like the hip and spine.
It is quick, painless, and involves very little radiation — much less than a standard X-ray.
The result gives a “score” (commonly a T-score or, in some cases, a Z-score), which shows whether your bone density is normal, lower than average (osteopenia), or low enough to be osteoporosis.

Up to 20% of bone loss may happen during the menopause transition or early post-menopause.
If you wait until bone loss is already advanced, prevention becomes harder. A DEXA scan around the late 30s–mid 40s can serve as a baseline — a reference point against which future bone changes are measured.
Early detection = opportunities for prevention

Lifestyle changes — diet rich in calcium and vitamin D; regular weight-bearing or strength exercises; reducing smoking/alcohol; maintaining healthy weight.
Monitoring bone density over time, especially if there are additional risk factors (e.g. early menopause, low body weight, medications, chronic disease).
Considering medical treatments if indicated (especially if osteopenia or early bone loss is present).
By doing this before bone becomes fragile, you reduce the risk of fractures later — which can have serious implications, particularly for hip or spinal fractures.
