Researchers in New Zealand have developed a new tool, called the Brain Age Gap Estimate (BrainAGE), which uses a single MRI scan to estimate how “old” your brain appears compared to your actual age.

What Is BrainAGE?

BrainAGE is a measure based on the concept that a brain that appears older than its chronological age may be more vulnerable to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. Using advanced machine learning algorithms, researchers can now analyse MRI scans and compare an individual’s brain structure to large population data sets. The difference between brain age and real age—the BrainAGE—could offer valuable insights into dementia risk.
